The Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali
The yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a collection of short, condensed phrases that reveal the essence of yoga philosophy.
“Yoga means ‘union,’ and refers to the uniting of the embodied soul with the universal consciousness. This happens through control of the thought waves in the mind (Sutra 2), which is brought about by persistent practice and dispassion (Sutra 12). The teachings of the Sutras were not created by Patanjali, but he was the first to compile them in written form. Before that, they were transmitted orally by the teacher and memorized by serious students of yoga.” B.H.D.
There are many translations of the sutras. In my study I have found it useful to read many versions of the texts as each translation brings out slightly different nuances, yet the seed is always the same. Each sutra introduces key concepts contained in yoga. Different translators elaborate on the meaning of the sutras, bringing insight and clarity to these beautiful aphorisms.
